The Kalgidhar Trust / Society - Baru Sahib
The Kalgidhar Society – Baru Sahib, is a not for profit, charitable organisation engaged in the delivery of value based educational programs at schools spread out in the northern part of India. The institution is proud of its very rich and powerful Sikh educational heritage - blessings and linkages through its founding Fathers, firstly, Sant Attar Singh Ji of Cheema, a village in Sangrur district of Punjab, India.
The most revered saint of modern India, even a century back, believed that mere scientific education would only lead to destruction - education has to holistically blend science with Spirituality in order to make the world a better place for all to live.He pioneered the phrase “when we educate a boy – we educate a man”. . His advocacy of education for the girl-child, and blending education with spirituality shows his sense of foresightedness. The thought of education of the girl-child meant to Baba Ji the education of the whole family.
His first educational set up was a school for girls in 1906. This he did even before establishing a school for boys and the Akal Degree College at Mastuana, Punjab. He went on to establish a chain of schools and colleges. In 1914 at the invitation of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya he laid the foundation stone of the Hindu Banaras University. He also took part in several educational conferences motivating others to establish many more schools and colleges. Such was his goodwill and popularity as a messenger of the Universal Brotherhood of the entire humanity
To carry the message of Sikhi into the future, Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji picked Sant Teja Singh Ji, MA, LLB , (Punjab) AM (Harvard). Sant Teja Singh Ji was born to Bhai Ralla Singh and Ram Kaur at Balowali village (in Pakistan) on 14 May 1877. Bhai Ralla Singh was a medical doctor working in Central Jail, Lahore. Sant Teja Singh Ji passed his postgraduate studies with distinction and continued with a degree in law. He later studied at University College London and University of Cambridge in the UK and then went on to Harvard University in the United States for further studies.
Sant Teja Singh Ji established The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib in 1963 to spread Guru Nanak Ji’s message of the Universal Brotherhood Man within the wider context of the Oneness of the Creator and His Creation. Sant Teja Singh entrusted the responsibility of managing and developing the activities at Baru Sahib to Baba Iqbal Singh Ji.
The mud-hut, housing the Gurdwara was expanded. Roads were built; vehicles began to ply and by 1975, six rooms were constructed. Thereafter, in 1981-82, the construction of cement and brick Gurdwara and Ashram building were started.
A humble beginning in a mud-hut Ashram in 1986, with just five students, Today The Kalgidhar Trust Baru Sahib, is proud to be blessed as a leading Sikh institution in the world. To know more about Baru Sahib’s charitable ventures, please visit www.barusahib.org
